This imposing basso-relievo frieze depicts a garlanded sacrificial ox skull. 
 
This motif originated in an Ancient Greek ceremony wherein an ox's head was hung from the wooden beams of Doric temples to please the Gods and invoke their favour and protection.

Similar bucrania are to be found at the Samothrace temple complex in Greece and the Temple of Vespasian and Titus in Rome (built in AD 79).
​
This piece is designed to hang on a feature wall but could alternatively stand on a large mantel or table as a striking ornament.
